The 2009 Oxford Symposium, Food and Language, took place at St Catz on 11-13 September 2009. A report about the weekend and photos will be posted shortly.
The 2010 Symposium, Cured, Fermented and Smoked Foods, will be held 9—11 July at St. Catherine’s College.
The programme is already shaping up into an exciting array of voices and flavours. Ivan Day, Sidney Mintz and Harold McGee will be plenary speakers. Jeremy Lee of the Blueprint Café has promised to cook up a Friday night dinner that will be a veritable Feast of Cockaigne. Fuchsia Dunlop is helping to organize a Chinese banquet on Saturday night. Stay tuned for further updates.
2010 papers
We are pleased to report that we had a large number of paper submissions, including paper proposals from many newcomers as well as Symposium regulars. After careful editorial consideration, we have taken the maximum number that the Symposium can accommodate, following the general rule that our aim is to give as many people the opportunity to speak as possible.
Each year fascinating sub-themes seem to emerge from our chosen Symposium topic. This year we have a large number of anthropologists and sociologists. Fermentation seems to have taken a starring role. As broad as the paper topics are the nationalities that are represented by Symposiasts who will be presenting papers: at last count, we now have 25 nations represented, and even more if we count the cultures that the papers are about.
Registration is now open. Because of sky-rocketing demand for places, we strongly urge people to register early. Places will be allocated on a strictly first come, first serve basis.
